[edit] Path Redirects

I have a question regarding path linking. I think it may be best to simply redirect to a certain section of the career that the path belongs to. For example have Path of Stabbin' redirected to Squig Herder#Path of Stabbin'. If so would the code simply be
#REDIRECT [[Squig Herder#Path of Stabbin']]

? swankykitty 20:15, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

That is indeed the right way to do it. Sunspots {Talk | Contribs} 00:26, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] WoW Splash Page is Back

That horrid WoW splash page is back (at least our wiki header is above it this time). I didn't realize it was being re-implemented. Did I miss an announcement somewhere, or did we fail to get the notification we were told we would receive if this happened again? -- Heaven's Agent 07:38, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

They didn't even try to hide the fact that we were singled out this time. The splash page isn't even up on WoWWiki -- Heaven's Agent 07:44, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Thank You

Sorry it's a bit late in coming but thank you for the welcome I'll continue to help where I can. And hello to you to..Splinkter 14:57, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Updates to Cultivating and Tailsman Making

1st of all, thanks for the welcome. Secondly, I think some major updates need to be added to the Cultivating and Tailsman Making pages. I have a chart that explains everything for tailisman making. For cultivating, there is no distinction between normal and rare seeds (very important). I can update this weekend if you like...Nikkiree 16:01, 18 November 2008

[edit] Problem reports

Hi there, did you have some open problem reports? You can view them at Special:ProblemReports. Its a great system for users to mark pages with various types of problems to bring them to the attention of admins. Often they are about the subject of the wiki, and only someone from the wiki can make the knowledgeable decision on how to fix the page.

Its a fairly simple system to use. You can click the magnify glass icon to show the reported problem for each ticket. The icons on the right change the status of the report. The green check mark icon is for "Fixed", you use this if you read the report, and changed something on the page to fix the reported problem, (or deleted it, if its a vandal/spam report), or anything that "Fixes" the problem. The red X icon is for "closed", this is for reports that are false/jokes, or things that are not really a problem. The yellow triangle will mark a report for need help by Wikia Staff, it is used when there is something wrong with the wiki that you cannot fix here with editing pages, such as menus not working, or skin problems, or anything beyond your control. Use it sparingly, as there are many wikis, and our time is limited, but dont be afraid to use it either, we dont want you to have a broken wiki for too long. The last icon is for returning a report back to an open or 'Pending' state if you accidentally used one of the first 3 icons.

If you are using the Monaco skin, there is a ProblemReport widget you can add to your sidebar, so you can see as soon as problems are reported. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask on my talk page, I'll be glad to help you help your wiki.

[edit] Character Creation

Moved to Talk:Character creation.

The Character Creation article is redirected to 'Character creation.' As well as being incorrect, poorly capitalized article titles make the Wiki look substantially less reliable. I'd like to suggest that the article be moved to the redirect, which can only be done by an administrator, since the redirect has an edit history (someone put their name in it at some point, and it was reverted back). The preceding unsigned comment was made by Gazzwidget (contribs) 25th November 2008.

In what way is "Character Creation" more correct than "Character creation"? Does the game refer to Character Creation? In most cases (Though many where I myself have made mistakes, especially when I was newer to the wiki - the link on the main page may be the result of some of my earlier meddling, and certainly the sidebar is) we try to not over-capitalise everything. See here for the relevant guideline.
Of course we make exceptions when the game capitalises something, but even then (me not having bought the game) does the game's Character Creation fulfil the same purpose as our article on it (Character Creation isn't a proper noun or even a core gameplay element). However i'd be happy to do it if we can reach a consensus or you can show me that i'm wrong. By the way, i've seen some of your contributions so far, good job :) ~ Revoran | talk 02:33, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
On second thought, this discussion might be better off on the Talk:Character Creation. Moving there. ~ Revoran | talk 02:33, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image Renaming

You left me a message (see Talk:Mirgul) about renaming images I had uploaded with non-descriptive names. I have been hunting for the means to do so easily (ie. without uploading them all again) but have had no luck in the search. Can you please give me a helpful nudge in the right direction? (Mirgul 20:15, 2 December 2008 (UTC))

Sorry for hijacking. I don't know which way you upload your images, but you should be able to just change the destination filename on Special:Upload, just don't forget the extension. Sunspots {Talk | Contribs} 22:15, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
These were images that I already uploaded (my first real contribution) before I realized I should name them something more descriptive so others could reference them. That being said, is there a way to rename an image (like Moving an article) or should I upload appropriately named duplicate images and mark the old ones for deletion? (Mirgul 01:29, 3 December 2008 (UTC))
Unfortunately the only way I know of is to re-upload the entire file. However it may not be as tedious as you think. By clicking the "upload a new version" link on the image page, it allows you to upload a new version with a different name, which replaces the old version if i'm not mistaken. That would save you marking a whole bunch of uploads for deletion. That would be comparable to moving a page. ~ Revoran | talk 07:14, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
Argh, after testing it (check recent changes and you'll see what I did) it seems that you still have to mark the old file for deletion (which increases my work too, heh). Needless to say you're under no obligation to do this, or do it now. :) ~ Revoran | talk 07:16, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
I was afraid of this. :( After having done some Google research, it seems that it is a problem that most of the MediaWiki community is aware of (including the dev team.) It's in the list of things-to-do. I code for a living so I know what that means. I'll put the renaming in my own things-to-do list, too. ;) (Mirgul 07:23, 3 December 2008 (UTC))

[edit] Hi Revoran

Thank you for reminding me about asking permission from owner of the bastion stair maps to publish the map here. It is my bad to overlook this important issue. I have posted the note to ask the permission on owner's blog. I will take off the maps on Monday if he don't response by then. Let me know if that's the proper way to handle this.

Thank you for the welcome and instruction.

I have just got map owner's permission to post the map on the Warhammer wiki, as long as we post the link and give him the credit.

[edit] Re: Some Things

I'll take a look at deleted pages; as far as I'm aware most of them were due for the axe, and I'll take a look at the others.

To be honest, I haven't put much thought into PQ categorization. I would think putting all of them into a single PQ category wouldn't serve any real purpose, only resulting in a large list that no one can really navigate. Most likely the specific categories are more called for, and even these may need refined. -- Heaven's Agent 17:21, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] What's Your Opinion

I've got a couple projects sitting in my Sandbox that I'd like your feedback on before I push them forward (as well as that of anyone else who might read this).

First up is a format for individual Mounts Pages. I want to give the portals from out main page a face lift, bring them together visually, and I thought where better to start than with the new mounts that came with Update 1.2.0. It draws heavily from the design established by Blizzard at the WoW homepage; I wanted to create something uniquely our own, but I can't think of any better way to showcase the information.

Second is something I've been meaning to do for some time, also precipitated by my desire to refurbish the articles linked to from our main page (and eventually the main page itself): an Item Category Structure. I'm trying to keep it somewhat basic, limit subcategories but still use them where appropriate, and create something that allows us to put an average item in as few as 1-3 categories only while still being comprehensive.

As always, I look forward to your, as well as anyone's, thoughts on these projects. -- Heaven's Agent 23:38, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Heh, yeah I noticed those when I took a peek at your sandbox a couple of days ago. To be honest - sometimes someone comes up with a basic design that just does the job so effectively that there isn't much point trying to vary yours wildly. Despite 70 years of motoring, cars still have four wheels and run on petrol. There's no shame in not being the one to invent the hovercar. From an aesthetic point of view i'd put perhaps a few less boxes in the tables on the page, streamline it a little but there's nothing fundamentally wrong with the design.
The Item category structure is very well thought out, and I can only see a couple of problems:
1.You need to accomodate quest items, and possibly also crafting ingredients (not quite sure how they work in the inventory though so don't take me too seriously here).
2.he Career Item categories seem slightly cluttered, there seems to be too many of them for each career. However I wouldn'd be surprised if you've already picked the most streamlined way to set them out. - As well as that, what about equipment that can be used by multiple classes? I hear that's the case with some Marauder/Chosen items, among others. ~ Revoran | talk 11:58, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
I may just get the mounts pages up as soon as possible, then, and we can work on tweaking the design a bit as we go. I tried listing the information without the box borders, and it seemed extremely flat to me at that point. They may not be needed, but something is in order to make the content pop, so to speak.
I don't think we need to differentiate quest items; a greathammer is a greathammer, regardless of where it comes from. In addition, the source should be documented on the article for the item itself, and I also want to try getting sortable tables of equipment up that would include source information. And though I haven't had much experience with crafting items, you make a good point that the structure needs planned out; I'll see what I can come up with.
In my experience, equipment is broken down in two primary ways: armor is unique to a career, while weapons are unique to a race. So whereas a Chosen may be able to make use of a helm, no other career in the game would. And whereas a Chosen and a Marauder might be able to use a given axe, a Black Orc or Choppa would not be able to as it is unique to Raven Host characters only. I've reflected this by placing armor in career categories (Category:Warrior Priest boots, Category:Warrior Priest gloves, etc.) and weapons in racial categories (Category:Empire hammers, Category:Empire greathammers, etc.). In any event, I'll make a few changes and we'll see what you think. -- Heaven's Agent 15:47, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
Do you have any idea how to set up popup tooltips, like those utilized over at WoWWiki? Or tabs similar to those used on the Wikia Gaming Main Hub? They would make my Equipment List Layout a lot easier to impliment. -- Heaven's Agent 18:44, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
No, but I know they have the base templates (our template system needs a bit of reforming anyway so i'm not fussed if we start messing with it) over at WoWWiki (their main page uses the same feature). I'd try asking in #wowwiki or #wikia on irc.freenode.net (the wikia code gurus could probably help) - one thing that's always bothered me is that our templates don't have the small links on the top left hand corner for viewing the template, discussing the template, and editing it. As well as that, I suspect that if we do add that functionality we're going to have to copy/paste a large amount of it verbatim. Meaning there'll have to be a template to credit WoWwiki/Wikia Gaming with the creation of the code. In regards to quest items, I meant things such as "Kazagund's lost tooth" etc. For instance if you had to find a rune-enchanted gold tooth that a Dwarf lost - rather than quest rewards. It may be that there isn't much point documenting items like that though. It seems like you're all set then. I'm having more connection problems, but hopefully it won't be too much trouble - i'm currently working on stubs, zones, subzones and PQs to try to bring them all up to standard and get the groundwork done for later when we fully document everything. ~ Revoran | talk 19:18, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

(Resetting Indent) Looks like it's time I figure out how to use IRC, then. And with regard to the quest items you mentioned, I don't think they need any categorization; at most maybe Category:Nordland/Order quests/Items, and the like. -- Heaven's Agent 20:03, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Just finished talking to the folks over at WoWWiki. They gave me a lot of resources and information libraries to go through; looks like I'll be teaching myself some javascript. Maybe it's a good thing I'm currently unemployed. ;D -- Heaven's Agent 18:57, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
Heh, join the club ;). I wish you all the best with it, anything more than intermediate-level wiki coding is mostly beyond me - so I respect you folks who take the time and put in the effort to understand it. ~ Revoran | talk 07:51, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks for the Welcome

Hey there, you're welcome. I'm a long time viewer and figured it was time for me to give a little more back. There are still some quest dyes I haven't run across that aren't on the list but I think we've got the majority of them. If you have any suggestions for improvement on the dye list, let me know and I'll see what I can do. I'd like some kind of a swatch image but my early attempts left a lot to be desired. I'll keep trying. Savyj 02:38, 17 March 2009 (UTC)\

Oh, also, it looks like we can do easy tooltip inclusion via the information at WarDB Syndication Information. It does require you to include a JS library in the head tag, however, so I'm not certain how to accomplish that with a Wikia site. Savyj 02:46, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

You seem to be doing a wondeful job so far - the only thing I might suggest is a comprehensive list of all the dye colours in the game, perhaps in a new article. Not sure if you've already done that as I haven't been watching that closesly. An in regards to the syndication, in theory we could do it - but the tooltip only pops up if the link leads to the WARDB. As the links on HammerWiki lead to other HammerWiki pages, no tooltip would appear. Which is a pity because it would be very useful to have that functionality. The revelvant talk for that is here: talk:Community Portal/Syndication part 2.
What do you mean by "swatch" image? ~ Revoran | talk 07:59, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
A swatch is a color palette...all the colors organized together. I found the dye list in data.myp and I'm working on creating a nice looking swatch for the site. When I'm done you can preview it and decide the best place for it to go. Also, I redirected my user page, as suggested. Savyj 21:52, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
Ah. Well I can't help you there, but you should keep trying. Theoretically you could upload each image separately, then make a template for each image. Ie: {{ch}} (Template:ch) comes out as Chaos - then redirect the image's page itself to the page on the dye colour. If they were all squares, then you could stick them all together, effectively making a swatch in which each individual image links to it's respective page. Nifty, but a lot of work. ~ Revoran | talk 07:39, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Fat charlie

Hey Revoran, I noticed that a recent update by you was welcoming a user named Fat charlie to the wiki. However, I also noticed that his only contribution was to vandalize the Character creation article, which I reverted. Not sure how the admins handle registered users that vandalize pages (couldn't find much info other than how to revert back to a good copy), but you may not want to be quite so welcoming. :) -- (Gehmnal 14:05, 19 March 2009 (UTC))

Haha, hey Ghemnal - that's actually an automated welcome bot (hosted/written by Wikia, not me). I'm guessing it just posts under the account of whichever admin was active last. I'm not sure who enabled it actually, it could have been Heaven's Agent or possibly a Wikia Staff member. Thanks for letting me know, and for reverting that vandalism (that's the only thing regular users can do, there is a feature called rollback -some users have that privelidge-, which is a more powerful varient of reversion, and also admins can delete pages). ~ Revoran | talk
Gotcha, had a feeling it was automated but wasn't sure. Glad I could help out a bit there. -- (Gehmnal 14:20, 19 March 2009 (UTC))

[edit] Re: A couple questions

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping HA knew of an easier way to grab icons instead of having to take screenshots and cut out the portions needed. Good to know about the templates, I hope there won't be any issues with many many updates to a Template article for testing purposes (I'll use my Sandbox to test it). It won't be as easy as just copying a table over, there will probably be a ton of "if" statements and whatnot to deal with unused stats and effects, etc. Honestly I'm not even sure it's possible to template the Armor Set tables in a similar manner as the Item template, and may have to create a template for 2-pc sets, 3-pc sets, etc. -- (Gehmnal 14:46, 19 March 2009 (UTC))

[edit] Hm

Sir, did you quit the project altogether? Would you mind changing the page with some updated content if possible? --SirRandomage 14:16, October 9, 2009 (UTC)

Sir, ha, -i'm no sir. I haven't officially quit no, but I won't pretend I do much around here these days. However if you change the editcopy of the mainpage (link is at the bottom) i will change the mainpage to match it tomorrow (it's 5am). ~ Revoran | talk 18:02, October 9, 2009 (UTC)
I don't have much experience in that, any chance you could summon an editor that usually updates the sidebar with patchnotes and other stuff? I'm kinda busy with redoing the abilities template. :P --SirRandomage 18:09, October 9, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Heh

Still, cast your vote and voice your opinion, eventually. I'll keep working on my php script to scrape data from db sites and put it here (mass import first, data refinement second).

Btw, what do you think about the <onlyinclude>{{{{{tpl|default_template}}}|item/spelldata}}</onlyinclude> solution? --Madness ❧ talk 19:39, October 22, 2009 (UTC)
