[edit] Wikia-merger talk
Just wanted to check in and say hi! Hope things with the merge are going well. I wanted to get your thoughts on something.
Wikia wikis are on a different Media Wiki code base than gamewikis sites. Normally when wikis migrate to Wikia they move to our code base. In this case, due to the size of guildwiki and some of the community issues, we are not going to move Guildwiki to our code-base for a while (or maybe even never). I wanted to how-ever make that option available to Hammer Wiki. Being much smaller, it could be done very easily. The benefits would be access to Wikia's extensions/skins/widgets/wysiwyg editors, etc. You would also be merged into our user data base and be able to access Wikia's blacklist (for spam protection). You could keep your current domain or opt for a wikia domain, which-ever you guys preferred. If you prefer to stay on your current code-base along with guildwiki this is totally fine. Just wanted to make sure you were aware of the options :) Let me know what you think or if you have questions Angies 23:19, 25 October 2007 (UTC) (angies from wikia)
- Hi Angies. Thanks for stopping by. :)
- The question you pose is a difficult one to answer. To be honest, I am completely unfamiliar with the Wikia code base, meaning I do not know what the consequences would be of moving the content. Would the layout remain the same for default users? I seem to get a different layout on various Wikias, possibly depending on what browser I am using. Would editing remain the same?
- The short answer is yes, the layout and editing would stay exactly the same (until you decide otherwise). Wikia runs on a slightly modified version of MediaWiki 1.10. The "modifications" are new features and extensions that don't come with the vanilla MW install (youtube, polls, optional wysiwyg editor, regex spam blocking, easy image upload tool, etc). The different layouts you are seeing are called "skins" which are adopted at the discretion of each community. (which is why you see different ones on different wikis) The full documentation is here and here. The new quartz skin has alot of benefits to monobook, and is part of our commitment to help wikis grow and thrive through software and community management innovation. That said, we think every community is different and therefore respect your wishes to keep you on monobook for as long as you like :)
- ffxiclopedia.org, tabularasa.wikia.com and eq2i (eq2.wikia.com) all recently migrated recently and wowwiki.com is going through it right now. If you have any questions of concerns I am sure they would be happy to give you their thoughts. This is typically not an optional thing (as managing more than 1 code base is not good engineering practice), but in light of some of the trauma Guildwiki went through we want to take things very slow.
- Also, we recently partnered with Curse Gaming (www.curse.com) to let them use our wikis. Curse wanted to start their own wikis but decided to just use ours instead. We think this is good for our wikis b/c it increases the awareness and brings in new potential readers and editors. We would love to inlclude this wiki but we have to get it on our codebase first. Angies 00:24, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
And what about the user base -- currently, we share with GuildWiki, but I'm sure there's already a Bishop (and one of alomst every other conceivable name) on Wikia. Unless the accounts are separate between Wikia wikis, which I doubt. Keeping those things in mind, I'm not quite convinced of the wisdom in moving. But on the other hand, there's definitely something to be said for a more homogeneous integration. And if the torrent of vandalism keeps escalating as it has been over the last few days, I suppose it might force our hand on the issue.
- We would have to merge the userbase. We can do a check on the users for Hammerwiki to see if there will be any conflicts beforehand. I just checked and there is surprisingly no Bishop :) Angies 00:24, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- At any rate, as with most of these issues, I would much rather others voiced an opinion on these matters than having to make decisions in a vacuum (although I will, if the alternative is to leave things in limbo). To allow for this, I think we are best off at least holding off on this for a little while.
- I agree, that think this topic should be made open to the community, but felt is was important that an admin propose it rather than a person who could be biased :) Angies 00:24, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- On the issue of redirecting the Wikia Warhammer Online wiki, however, I think the time is about mature enough for that. It is obvious that activity there has died in preparation for the merger, and work has been put into moving the best content into HammerWiki. I think we are currently doing the potential community a disservice by still having 2 wikis. What to do about the non-Warhammer Online related content remains an issue, but as best I can tell, no one has stepped forward to claim any kind of interest in the subject, and I do not believe we can keep letting that stand in the way of the next logical step indefinitely. Is there a way we could keep that content "on hand" for when someone comes along with the time, energy and inclination to do a Warhammer wiki? Either way, from what I can tell, there is no longer any real reason to hold back on the redirection of domains. --Bishop 15:14, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
- Great. I will get the redirect in place in the next 48 hours. Angies 00:24, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- PS: I took the liberty of changing the topic of this conversation, I hope that is okay. --Bishop 15:14, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry for the delay in my response. I tried to answer your questions in-line.Angies 00:24, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- Hey Bishop, you around? we would really like to move this wiki to our code-base as soon as possible. Please let me know if you have any strong objections.. I promise we will not do anything to harm this wiki (its way too important to us!) Angies 17:57, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
- Oh yes, I'm quite around. I understand your wanting to move to the wikia code base as soon as possible. And, considering there has been no major outcry, and the prevalence of the vandalism problems, I'm going to go ahead and come out in favor of switching code base. As far as I am concerned, you can do ahead and make it happen whenever it is convenient. I hope and trust that this will turn out to be the best course of action for HammerWiki in the long run. --Bishop 19:18, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
- Cool. That pretty much settles that, I guess. :) --Bishop 21:28, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
- Hey Guys, Sorry for being MIA on this. We are in the process of upgrading all of Wikia to MW 1.11 and once that is sorted and everything is working ok we will be migrating the entire gamewikis.org site to our code base (its just simply not feasible to manage multiple MW code-bases) I expect this will happen in January, but will make sure you guys have enough notice and get a chance to test the site before it goes live. 208.106.104.170 22:11, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
- Ooh boy, there's going to be some fallout from that one. Not here, I mean, we're pretty much settled on the idea. But unless you've done something about the user-database-issue... when the Guildwiki community finds out their logins are all gone... duck and cover. » Bishop · talk « 08:40, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] The Greenys
Hey mate,
I don't know if you've seen this yet, but I think your WIKI would fit nicely in the RESOURCE category. If this looks interesting to you, please read the contest rules and nominate yourself! :)

- Thanks for the heads up. Your awards look like a fine way to get HammerWiki some exposure, I'll head over and check it out. I doubt we'll put a link on the front page (although if the community feels we should, I can't see why not), but I can put one in my user space for starters. :) » Bishop · talk « 18:00, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Policy proposals
Any feedback on the policy proposals would be great. Setting up the basic policies might be a good idea. --

[edit] Hello
Thanks for the welcome and the heads up on use of images, I am very new to this Wiki stuff so any help is appriciated =)
I got two questions for you.
- How should I write feet? Should I write it like feet or ft?
- Is there some way to browse all uploaded images if I need a certain image for a page?
—The preceding unsigned comment was made by Gigaboost (contribs) .
- You're welcome. When you talk about feet, I imagine you mean the measurement unit? I think "ft" will do fine, to make sure you're not talking about the things at the end of legs.
- About images, there's several ways to go about it. One way is to go to Special:Newimages where you can see the latest uploads, but you can also page backwards and actually see every image if you page back long enough.
- By the way, when you post on talk pages, consider signing your comments. The very simplest way is to just add four tildes, like so ~~~~ or by pushing the "sign" button on the edit menu. Later, you can always read a lot more about signatures in HammerWiki:Signature_policy. But don't worry too much about that before you feel like it. » Bishop · talk « 21:34, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I was talking about the measurement, I've seen it written as both feet and ft all over the site. Thanks for the heads up about images (again) and the signature policy, much appriciated. --22:01, 15 February 2008 (UTC)Gigaboost
[edit] Template
That seems to have worked, thanks, I owe you one. Revoran 13:44, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
Hey Bishop, I created an "Ability Template" page and talk section to speak about the need for one. Please check the page and it's discussion for consideration. Thank you. http://war.gamewikis.org/wiki/Ability_template --Mikeblack 07:26, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Team introduction
Bishop, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce the gaming team to the community, and let you know the success of your wiki is extremely important to us, and we are here to help out in any way!
As the marketing manager here at Wikia Gaming, and over the next few weeks, I will be concentrating on developing relationships with EA Mythic. The final goal will be for us to run events for the community, and have some exclusive contests on the wiki. I would love to discuss options, and brainstorm some ideas for events on the wiki with you.
You'll also be hearing from Kyle Harmon, our community development manager. If you have any questions at all with "wiki stuff", like how to set up effective templates or how to spice up the homepage, give him a yell. He'll have a few of his own suggestions as well, but his main goal is just to make sure that you have everything you need to make your wiki work as well as possible.
We'll be in touch. Lleowen 22:45, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you for the introduction. It sounds great about talking up EA Mythic a bit, historically they've not really noticed us, regardless of the fact that we're by far the most comprehensive guide to the game outside of beta access. Not that I hold it against them, we've just not been lucky enough to get spotted by the right people at the right time yet. » Bishop · talk « 19:35, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
- Bishop, I haven't made much headway with EA/Mythic yet, but I never give up! However there are 2 things I would like to discuss with you and Pendrako. 1) Do you know anyone at Warhammer Alliance? as there are no official forums, I would love to reach out to WHA and partner with them to create a holistic source of information, their forums and Hammer wiki are great complements, and we can get some great exposure. 2) I want to go hold an event on Hammer wiki in April, and would like to discuss what you feel the community would respond well to. Here is the basic idea "Follow the Swordmaster on a journey to perfect balance. Hidden throughout Hammer Wiki, are clues to help you on this quest. Assemble all the clues to find the answer..." When you have a moment, email me and we can create a great contest! Lleowen 00:10, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
- Lleowen, Pendrako is on vacation at the moment, so you're going to have to settle for me for the immediate future.
- As far as WHA, I have acquaintances there, mostly from the time I was active on the WAR IRC. Pendrako may have better connections, but I am going to leave it to him to speak for himself when he comes back. However, as I am sure you are aware, WHA is now part of Curse Gaming who are--in turn--partnered with Wikia. I'm not privy to how or what goes on behind the scenes, but you may have a more logical angle of contact there.
- As to the contest...I'm sure it's a fine idea, but that is really not my thing. Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not going to try and throw a wrench or anything like that. I hope you get something nifty going that can draw an even greater use base. But my focus and purpose for HammerWiki has always been documentation, and I think I am going to stick to that. I'm also currently a tad upset because I am going to lose the username I have used on GameWikis since not long after its inception, which does not leave me in a mood for thinking up games just now. » Bishop · talk « 02:00, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
- OK, I'm back now so I might as well jump in here. Lleowen, if you want to do anything involving WHA you need to be talking to Garthilk - he's the site owner and main admin. As far as events or contests on Hammerwiki are concerned, it sounds great, and I wouldn't mind hearing more about what you had in mind. Expect an email in the near future. - Pendrako talk 23:28, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Hi!
I already left a message on Pendrako's talk page, but I wanted to say hi to you too. My name is Kyle, and I work on Wikia's Gaming Team and my job is to make sure that you guys have everything you need to thrive. If you have any questions for the Wikia Staff or need any help with layout, design, or anything just give me a yell. I'm personally interested in the game too, so I'll probably be hanging around either way. ;)
-- KyleH 01:39, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hello Kyle and thanks for stopping by. :) Same goes for Lleowen, even though he kinda posted on my user page... It is nice to hear from some of the Wikia staff, we've been a bit in a vacuum here for a while. I have several things I would like to run by you guys, but unfortunately, your timing could not be much worse for me personally, as I have a bunch of off-line issues to deal with right now. I see you've already talked to Pendrako though, so I'm sure you'll all manage until I get some more free time, which should happen in a few days. » Bishop · talk « 12:39, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
- No worries about the timing ... I'd love to hear about your ideas whenever you have some free time. Things are going really well here already, but I'm sure we can come up with several ways to make it even better. --KyleH 19:56, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
- Sounds good. I'm not on top of my game today, but here's a couple of quick things: For starters, I made a mess of trying to implement an additional nav box like you suggested, but perhaps you could surmise my intent from looking at the undone edit to the Sidebar and fix it for me? I have a feeling messing with the navigation templates requires shell access. Secondly, I have a pet peeve about the fact that the main page says "Main Page<hr>" on it. That takes up premium screen real estate for no reason. All other pages should have their title clearly displayed, of course, but not the Main Page. I've been trying to find how to remove it--even asking around on other wikis--but to no avail. Perhaps you can work your wiki-tech magic? » Bishop · talk « 19:41, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks
No worries, -and thanks for the support. I had sort of wondered where you'd gotten to. But ah, while I certainly do a lot of work, don't let the number of edits in recent changes fool you, that's more because i have a tendency to edit a page, and then remember ten other things i needed to put it into once I've clicked save. But again, thanks. Mikeblack Deadpool and Vikingkingq have also been helping out a lot. :) ~ Revoran 04:46, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Article Ratings
Hey Bishop :) - I've started a talk on getting an article ratings system on Pendrako's talk page (yours is a bit crowded), just thought you might like to swing by. --> User talk:Pendrako#Article Ratings. ~ Revoran 08:33, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
