History of the Warhammer WorldEdit

The timeline lists general dates of major events according to the Imperial Calendar. If a date is given in the source material according to a different calendar (such as the Nehekharan Calendar which dates Year 0 as the beginning of King Settra the Imperishable's second reign, or the Gospodarin Calendar which dates Year 0 as the founding of the city of Kislev,) the dates are adjusted to the Imperial Calendar by matching them against the founding of the Empire of Man by Sigmar(Year 0, Imperial Calendar). The names of the various ages of creation are credited to the Lizardmen since they have the longest continual history of any intelligent race of the Warhammer World.

Whenever the date of an event is unknown, but it is understood to have happened after the given year, it will be listed as a subset of the given year.

The Dawn of Creation (-15,000 to -5600 IC)Edit

  • -15,000 IC The Old Ones arrive in what is now the tropical continent of Lustria on the Warhammer World through their newly-constructed polar Warp Gates. These arcane gates spawn pathways through the immaterial realm called the Aethyr, connecting multiple points instantaneously across the physical universe.
    • The first spawning of Slann Mage-Priests is created through the arcane biological engineering of the Old Ones.
  • -10,000 IC The founding of the first city by the Old Ones in Lustria, called Itza. Soon, the cities of Xlanhuapec and Tlax are founded as well.
    • The second generation of Slann are spawned by the Old Ones and are ordered to use the Old One's technology to change the orbit of the planet and move it closer to its sun, making it more hospitable to life, particularly for the warmth-loving reptilian Slann and Lizardmen.
    • The Old Ones begin to exert control over the various animal species of the world, bending them to their will and in some cases reshaping their forms.
    • The third generation of Slann are spawned. They found the temple-cities of TlaxtlanQuetza, and Zlatlan in Lustria.
    • The fourth generation of Slann are spawned to attend to the polar Warp Gates, and they found the remaining temple-cities of the growing Lizardmen empire.
    • The Old Ones split the world's existing single supercontinent into the separate continents whose geography is similar to what they look like today. The so-called "World Pond," as the Great Ocean is called by the Old Ones, is created to produce this separation. The pattern of the continents of the Warhammer World may have been duplicated or copied from the many worlds influenced by the Old Ones across the universe.
    • The Saurus subrace of the Lizardmen are created to protect the temple-cities, and enforce the will of the Old Ones. They set out to exterminate many "undesirable" races who are later discovered to inhabit the Warhammer World, including the Greenskins.
    • The Old Ones experiment further, bending the primordial intelligent races of the world to new and different shapes. ElvesDwarfs, and Humans are created or at least modified by the Old Ones at this time to survive on the world. Whether these peoples are truly native to the Warhammer World or emigrated from elsewhere is unknown.
    • The Old Ones create suitable habitats and climates on the planet for each of the intelligent races and animals they have created.
    • The Elves record this period as their Golden Age, when the world was at peace and their civilization and population size reached its heights. The Elves are a single people at this time and dwell in a large group of independent kingdoms on the island-continent of Ulthuan that the Old Ones shaped just for them.
    • The Greenskins first appeared in the Warhammer World sometime during this period. It is unknown whether they are a race native to the Warhammer World, though the Old Ones' surprise at their sudden appearance indicates that they were probably an unexpected addition to the world's ecosystems. The Old Ones send the Saurus to war against the undesirable race and remove them from the world. The Saurus are never able to fully stamp out the Greenskin menace, only control the population size of the myriad Orc and Goblin tribes. This is presumably due to the unusual reproductive system of the Greenskins, which allows them to survive even the total genocide of their existing populations. The Greenskins will become a near-constant danger to all the civilized peoples of the Warhammer World in the millennia to come.

The Fall (-5600 to -4500 IC)Edit

  • -5,600 to -4,500 IC The Old Ones' polar Warp Gates collapse and explode for some unknown reason. Chaos first enters the world as the raw Winds of Magic sweep across the planet from the ruined gates, which now serve as direct portals into the other-dimensional Aethyr, the Realm of Chaos.
    • The Old Ones disappear from the world at some point after the collapse of the Warp Gates, either in their great starships or back through the damaged Warp Gates; where they go is unknown. The enigmatic race may even have perished trying to defend the world against the entities of Chaos. They leave their Slann and Lizardmen servants behind to inhabit their temple-cities in Lustria and try and protect the Warhammer World from the incursion of Chaos.
    • Before they leave the Warhammer World behind, the Old Ones create a new intelligent species, the Giants, to protect the island of Albion, a small, windswept island off the coast ofNorsca in the Great Ocean. In addition, the Old Ones create the Ogre and Halfling races as their final acts of creation before departing the planet.
    • The Dwarfs, created by the Old Ones to live within subterranean habitats, settle in the World's Edge Mountains.
    • The temple-city of Xahutec falls to the daemon armies of Chaos; all of the Slann and Lizardmen within are slaughtered.
    • The Lizardmen muster the largest armies ever assembled to combat the hordes of Chaos daemons who can now manifest physically in the world in what later becomes known as theFirst Great War Against Chaos. Millions of the intelligent reptilian creatures are killed in these gigantic, world-spanning battles, as are many Elves, as that fey race joins the battle against the forces of Chaos to protect their homeland of Ulthuan. This first phase of the massive, global conflict becomes known as the First Great Chaos Incursion.
    • The Lizardmen temple-cities of Huatl, Tlanxla, Chaqua, and Xhotl are all destroyed by the hordes of Chaos daemons spilling from the polar gates.
    • Contact between the Lizardmen of Lustria and the Lizardmen of the Southlands is broken.
    • One of the oldest members of the first spawning of the Slann, Chiccotta of Zlatlan, manages to remove all of the Chaos daemons and mutants from the Southlands through the use of one potent spell that banishes them back into the Aethyr, though the magic costs his life in the process.
    • The Dwarfs first encounter Elves and become their allies in the fight against Chaos.
    • The Lizardmen temple-city of Chupayotl begins to sink into the ocean.

First Great War Against Chaos (-5000 to -4421 IC)Edit

  • -4500 IC The Elf Aenarion the Defender passes through the Sacred Flame to become the first Phoenix King of Ulthuan.
  • -4470 IC Aenarion draws the Sword of Khaine and the Elven race is cursed.
  • -4461 IC Aenarion finds and marries Morathi
  • -4458 IC The Birth of Malekith.
  • -4421 IC The Phoenix King Aenarion is wounded in the Battle for the Isle of the Dead with the forces of Chaos and flees to the Blighted Isle where he places the Sword of Khaine back on the altar of the Shrine of Asuryan. He is never seen again.
  • -4421 IC The Elves create the Vortex, draining vast amounts of magical energy from the world while being aided covertly by the Slann, who use their own magic to modify the Vortex so that it affects the Chaos energy being emitted by the southern as well as the northern polar Warp Gates.
    • When the Warp Gates at the planet's poles exploded and the power of Chaos spilled into the world, daemons and other creatures from the Aethyr began preying upon the early Elves during the First Great Chaos Incursion. A great Elven hero named Aenarion the Defender arose and forged an alliance between the rival Elven states. United for the first time in their history, the Elves drove back the daemons and creatures of Chaos and Aenarion was crowned the first Phoenix King of all Ulthuan, taking Astarielle as his Everqueen. After a time, the minions of Chaos invaded the homeland of the Elves once again during the Second Great Chaos Incursion, this time with their corrupted human followers. A great host of daemons assaulted the Inner Kingdom of Avelorn and slew the Everqueen and, it was believed, Aenarion's two children. Maddened by his family's loss and the attacks on his people, Aenarion drew the Sword of Khaine and led the Elven host to war against Chaos once more. Aenarion won a titanic battle against the forces of Chaos and managed to plunge the Sword back into the Altar of Khaine before he died. His sacrifice bought enough time for the great Elven High Mage Caledor Dragontamer to enact his plan to drain the Chaos energy away from the world. Caledor Dragontamer intended to use the ancient Menhir Stones (focal points of magical energy created by the Old Ones around Ulthuan, to drain off the Chaos energy of the Aethyr which was spewing into the world from the damaged Warp Gates at the poles. This energy allowed the creatures of the Realm of Chaos such as daemons to manifest bodily in the physical world with ease and assault the Elves. Unfortunately, the magical energy required to carry out the plan was so great (despite the covert aid of the Slann in Lustria) that it caused the entrapment within the magical sink that came to be called the Vortex of all the Elven High Mages invloved, including Caledor. The plan created the Vortex on the Isle of the Dead at the very centre of Ulthuan which continuously drains magical energy away from the world. However, the plan proved only partially successful, for while the enormous amount of magical energy emitted by the polar Chaos Gates is drained away, it continues to spill from the Realm of Chaos in large enough amounts to create and maintain the Chaos Wastes, thus allowing Chaos to retain large footholds on the Warhammer World. Following the creation of the Vortex, Chaos daemons could no longer manifest in the physical world with ease, though the could still haunt the Wastes where the concentration of magic remained abnormally high. Despite their success, Caledor and the rest of the High Mages were trapped inside the Vortex, where they suffered eternal imprisonment as time had ceased to flow naturally within the raging storm of magical energy.
    • The Dwarf Ancestor Gods disappear. During the First Great War Against Chaos, the Dwarfs fought side-by-side with the Elves in a desperate struggle for the survival of the Dwarf hold of Karak Vlag in the northern reaches of the World's Edge Mountains. Karak Vlag was enveloped by the warping power of Chaos, cutting it off from the rest of the world. After the Chaotic hordes had finally been driven back to their own realm following the creation of the Vortex on Ulthuan, the Dwarfs returned to the site of Karak Vlag to find that the stronghold and its entire garrison had disappeared into the Realm of Chaos, as if it had never existed. It was after this first coming of Chaos that the Dwarf Ancestor Gods also lost contact with their worshippers.
    • The Ogham Circles, magical defenses created to keep the power of Chaos at bay, are erected on the isle of Albion after the end of the First Great War Against Chaos. The island of Albion first entered the annals of history when it was chosen as a location for the massive stone circles erected by both the Lizardmen and the High Elves during the First Great War Against Chaos. The circular formations of standing Ogham stones are part of the ancient network of magical defenses that direct the raw Winds of Magic that blow from the Realm of Chaos at the north pole of the world towards the magical Vortex erected by the High Elves on Ulthuan. The damp, stormy weather and the degenerate, barbaric nature of the woad-wearing humans on the island are direct consequences of this magical influx.
