[edit] Tabletop Game Genre

A role-playing game is a game in which the participants assume the roles of fictional characters. Participants determine the actions of their characters based on their characterization, and the actions succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines, which are often determined by the fantasy game world in which the game is set. Within the rules, players can improvise freely; their choices shape the direction and outcome of the games.

[edit] Video Game Genre

A role-playing game (RPG) is a game in which the participants assume the roles of fictional characters and play out the lives or stories of those characters. In most traditional role-playing video games, there is a great deal of freedom in designing said character's nature, and it is encouraged to imagine a personality and history for that character. Common elements of role-playing games include character statistics, an avatar whose appearance you can select, describe, or change, and choices in the paths those characters take through the course of the game.

[edit] Internet Role-Playing Games

Internet role-playing games have been around almost as long as the internet itself, beginning with text based games (such as MUDs) on multiplayer servers. There are also text-based role-playing games carried out on forums, in chat rooms, and anywhere that creative minds may gather and communicate. The most common type of internet role-playing game today is the MMORPG, which is a role-playing game played with a large number of other players in a shared, graphical world. Examples of this increasingly popular variant include Blizzard's World of Warcraft, Dark Age of Camelot by EA Mythic, and Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning.
