The pact that binds the Great Eagles to the High Elves is ancient, lasting since the time that the legendary Caradinor and Sulinash rode to war against the Daemons of Chaos.

Compared to Griffons, or even Elven steeds, Great Eagles are highly intelligent and require no training and very little coaxing to join the Elves in battle. Their depth of understanding and their intellect is greater than any creature save perhaps Dragons, and the wisest of the Asur are able to converse with them as if passing the time of day. Great Eagles are haughty and proud creatures though, and they do not suffer foolish company gladly.

The Great Eagles are large enough that they can, if they so choose, consent to be used as mounts. Their long friendship with the High Elves has occasionally resulted in the Great Eagles allowing Elves to be borne into battle on their backs. The birds will only offer this service when confronted with an exceptionally dire threat. Far more common is the Great Eagle's use as a long range scout. The Eagles' value as messengers and scouts is obvious, as it is difficult for any opposing force to escape their watchful eyes.

When the forces of Chaos or Dark Elves come to raid Ulthuan, it is often the Great Eagles who warn of the arrival of the black sailed vessels, and when the High Elves assemble for battle, the noble Eagles join the throng. With powerful talons, the Great Eagles swoop down upon the crew of enemy war machines and tear them apart before using mighty wings to bear themselves swiftly away and out of reach.

Tome TextEdit

An ancient race, the Great Eagles have dwelled in their mountain aeries for centuries. The Great Eagles are large enough that they can, if they so choose, consent to be used as mounts. Their long friendship with the High Elves has occasionally resulted in the Great Eagles allowing Elves to be borne on their backs. The birds will only offer this service when confronted with an exceptionally dire threat.

Far more common is the Great Eagle's use as a long range scout. The eldest of the High Elves are capable of speaking with the great birds. The Eagle's value as messengers and scouts is obvious, as it is difficult for any opposing force to escape their watchful eyes.

So troubled and tragic is the history of my people that we must resist the temptation to fall into despair. Centuries of war against the powers of darkness have caused a great weariness within our souls. It is little wonder that so many of our kin have given in to their dark passions and forbidden desires, joining the traitorous Witch King in Naggaroth.

When a shadow falls upon my heart, I watch the Great Eagles that soar above the Annulii Mountains to the east. So magnificent and untouched by evil are these wonderous creatures that I feel as if my spirit is soaring with them among the clouds. I am renewed by the sight of them.

-From the writings of Tiraenor Windrunner, High Elf poet and philosopher
