The position of Supreme Patriarch is the highest attainable position by a wizard within the Empire. The patriarch is responsible for advising the Emperor is all decisions dealing with the Arcane. Every couple of years each of the eight Colleges of Magic elect one of thier number to compete in duel with an equal counterpart. The victor of these arcane duals receives the office of Supreme Patriarch as the right to wield the ancient Staff of Volans.

Balthasar Gelt is the most recent winner of this exalted position. A member of the Gold College he ousted the former Patriarch in an epic duel. Now the Winds of Magic blow strongly for the Gold College as thier fortunes are once again on the rise.

Balthasar Gelt, before he was Supreme Patriarch, one day had an accident. In his laboratory, suddenly, an explosion was heard and light seemed to stream out of the door. Many people wanted to see Gelt and tend to his wounds, but he ordered them to leave him alone. After as few days he arrived wearing robes, gloves and then a gold mask which he has never been seen without since. Apparentley since he was Patriarch of the Gold Order, his fellow Lord Magisters seem to try to copy their Patriarch by also wearing eccentric masks of gold or mother metals. It is also rumoured that actually the Patriarch has finally found the formular of transmutation and in the accident turned his skin to gold, henceforth the gloves.
